eilp.arunachal.gov.inShergaon is a small village in West Kameng with almost no local taxi availability. If you travel one-way, arranging a return cab on the spot is genuinely difficult — and the few options available charge significantly higher rates. A round-trip booking with ONE Cabs means your driver stays in the area, you travel back at the agreed fare, and there is no uncertainty at either end of the trip. For most travellers, especially families and first-time visitors, a round trip is the only sensible option.
Ask for Round Trip PricingIndia's most recently recognised tourism village — and still genuinely uncrowded.
Shergaon received India's Best Tourism Village award from the Ministry of Tourism — recognition of its intact culture, clean environment and authentic community-based tourism.
The area around Shergaon is dotted with apple and kiwi orchards that come into season between October and February. Walking through working orchards in a Himalayan village is an experience unlike anything in Assam.
The Sherdukpen people are a small Buddhist community unique to West Kameng. Their weaving, festivals, and daily way of life remain largely unchanged — a rare window into tribal Arunachal.
The Zengbu Gompa is a centuries-old monastery perched above the village with views across the West Kameng valley. Mornings here, with cloud layers below the ridge, are particularly striking.
A short walk from the village leads to Choskorong Waterfall — one of those places that is genuinely difficult to photograph well because the scale only makes sense in person.
Shergaon sits at the edge of Eagle Nest Wildlife Sanctuary — one of the world's most biodiverse protected areas. Serious birders and wildlife photographers treat this as a primary destination in its own right.
The mountain road from Bhalukpong to Shergaon matters — choose accordingly.
Two different routes — both lead to Shergaon, each with its own character.
Head north from Guwahati via Baihata Chariali. This stretch crosses the Brahmaputra plains — flat, fast, and straightforward. Mangaldoi is the first significant town on this route and a natural point for breakfast and fuel. The road is a mix of highway and state highway — mostly good, with some stretches that can be bumpy.
~68 km · 1 – 1.5 hoursFrom Mangaldoi, continue north through Orang — passing the edge of Orang National Park before reaching Bhairabkunda. This is the Arunachal Pradesh entry point on this route where your ILP is checked. Bhairabkunda sits at the confluence of the Bhareli and Dhansiri rivers — a striking natural landmark that marks the transition from plains to foothills. Ensure all permits are ready well before reaching here.
~80 km from Mangaldoi · 1.5 – 2 hoursAfter the checkpost, the road enters Arunachal Pradesh and begins climbing immediately. This is one of the more visually striking stretches — the road passes through dense jungle with the foothills rising sharply on all sides. Road quality is mountain standard: narrower, winding, and requiring a careful driver. Kalaktang is a small West Kameng town where you can stop for lunch or tea.
~50 km · 2 – 2.5 hoursThe final section from Kalaktang climbs steadily through ceramic-white hillsides and high-altitude forest. Apple orchards begin appearing as you gain elevation. Shergaon opens up at around 1,800 m — the air is noticeably cooler and the Zengbu Gompa is visible on the ridge above the village. Depart Guwahati by 6 AM to arrive comfortably before dark.
~30 km · 1 – 1.5 hoursOnce you arrive in Shergaon, getting around the surrounding area independently is not straightforward. ONE Cabs offers a per-day local sightseeing package at ₹5,000/day — your cab is at your disposal for the full day, covering the Zengbu Gompa, Choskorong Waterfall, the orchards, Eagle Nest sanctuary approach, and any other stops you want to make. No meter running, no negotiating with local drivers. Add it to your booking when you confirm the main trip.

"We were a family of four with no idea about the ILP process. The ONE Cabs team sorted everything out over WhatsApp the day before — told us exactly what to upload and which district to select. The drive itself was stunning from Bhalukpong onwards. Our driver knew every turn on that mountain road and had us in Shergaon well before sunset."
"Took the Innova Crysta for the Guwahati to Shergaon trip with five of us. Absolutely the right call — that road after Kalaktang is not for small cars with heavy luggage. The driver was calm on the hairpin sections and stopped at the viewpoints without us having to ask. Round trip was worth it; there are genuinely no return taxis in Shergaon."
"I had been planning this trip for months after seeing the India's Best Tourism Village news. ONE Cabs confirmed the booking on WhatsApp within minutes. We added the local sightseeing package and it was the best decision — we covered the Gompa, the waterfall and the orchards in a single relaxed day without any negotiation about fares."
The Guwahati to Shergaon cab fare starts at ₹7,500 for a Sedan. An Ertiga SUV starts at ₹8,500 and an Innova Crysta at ₹9,500. All fares are one-way and include toll charges. Round trip pricing is available — contact us on WhatsApp for a quote.
Shergaon is approximately 350 km from Guwahati by road via the Tezpur–Bhalukpong route on NH15. The route passes through Tezpur (~180 km), crosses into Arunachal Pradesh at Bhalukpong, and continues via Tenga Valley to reach Shergaon in West Kameng district.
The journey typically takes 7 to 8 hours including short breaks. The first ~180 km to Tezpur on the highway takes 3.5–4 hours. The remaining mountain section from Bhalukpong to Shergaon takes another 3–4 hours due to the winding road — plan to depart Guwahati by 6–7 AM to arrive before dark.
Yes — an ILP is mandatory. Shergaon is in Arunachal Pradesh and all non-resident Indian visitors require an Inner Line Permit. Apply online at eilp.arunachal.gov.in. The tourist eILP is valid for up to 14 days. Fee is ₹300 for up to 3 days and ₹500 for up to 14 days. Children under 14 are exempt. Approvals are typically same-day during working hours.
Return cabs from Shergaon are very limited — it is a small village with almost no local taxi availability. Travelling one-way means risking being stranded or paying significantly higher on-the-spot rates. A round-trip booking with ONE Cabs means your driver stays in the area and returns you at the agreed fare. For most travellers, especially families, a round trip is the only practical option.
For 2–3 passengers, a Sedan (Dzire/Etios) at ₹5,200 is the most practical choice. For families of 4–6, the Ertiga (₹8,500) or Innova Crysta (₹9,500) is strongly recommended — the mountain road from Bhalukpong benefits from higher ground clearance and a more powerful engine. If you are extending the trip to Tawang or Bomdila, book the Innova Crysta.
Yes — all toll charges are included. The fare confirmed at booking is the fare you pay at your destination. There are no toll additions, no driver allowance charges, and no last-minute revisions.
Shergaon was recognised as India's Best Tourism Village in 2023. Key things to do: visit the Zengbu Gompa monastery, walk to Choskorong Waterfall, explore the apple and kiwi orchards, interact with the Sherdukpen community, and access the Eagle Nest Wildlife Sanctuary — one of the most biodiverse protected areas in India. The village itself is worth a morning walk simply for the views across the West Kameng valley.
October to April is the best window. Skies are clear, roads are accessible, and orchards are either bearing fruit (October–February) or in blossom (March–April). Avoid June to September — monsoon rains make the mountain roads difficult and sometimes blocked entirely. Winter (December–January) brings cold, crisp conditions and occasional snow on higher ridges above the village.
